Regarding ion optics, this beamline has a magnetic quadrupole doublet followed by an X-Y steerer. The diagnostics are a collimator, a quartz viewer, target frame current and 'beam dump' current. To tune this line, set the steerers to No Steering, the doublet to calculated values and the switcher to a good estimate. Observe the quartz viewer. Sweep the switcher above and below the estimated value until you observe a small glow on the quartz. Adjust the Tunnel Triplet, Beamline Doublet and Switcher to produce a bright, roughly circular spot. If the Doublet steers, use the Switcher (horizontal plane) or Tunnel Steerer (vertical) to place the beam in the center of the Doublet. Now remove the quartz and observe the Target and Dump currents. Use the Doublet strength (ie, turn controls up or down as a pair) and X-Y steerer to maximize the Target while minimizing the Dump.

Background

Operation

To select polarity of the switching magnet:

To select a beamline:

  • Proceed to the control room and find the rightmost rack in the console.
  • Turn down the Doublet and Triplet supplies with all 4 controls. Use the push buttons to turn the supplies Off.
  • Press Master Clear. Then Select your beamline.
  • Use the push buttons to turn the supplies on.

To allow beam into a beamline:

  • Proceed to the Target Room
  • Ensure that vacuum in the line is 1 x 10-5Torr or better
  • Ensure that vacuum in the switching magnet is 1 x 10-5 Torr or better
  • Controls for the valves between the switcher and beamlines are in the NW corner of the Target Room. Select you beamline.
  • Select it again. Choose the right one!!
  • Put the switch to OPEN. You should here an pneumatic control open the valve

On this beamline we will do the 11B(p,n)11C positron emitter half-life experiment.

This beamline is pumped by a Pfeiffer turbomolecular pump located downstream of the Quadrupole Doublet. There is one valve between the pump and target which should be Open. The vacuum should be better (lower!) than 1 x 10-5 Torr.

On this beamline we will do the 27Al(p,n)27Si neutron threshold experiment.

This beamline is pumped by a Alcatel turbomolecular pump located downstream of the Quadrupole Doublet. There are two valves on the line: one upstream of the pump and one between the pump and the target. Both should be Open. The vacuum should be better (lower!) than 1 x 10-5 Torr.

Regarding ion optics, this beamline has a magnetic quadrupole doublet followed by an X-Y steerer. The diagnostics are a quartz viewer and target frame current. Now remove the quartz and observe the Target current. Use the Doublet strength (ie, turn controls up or down as a pair) and X-Y steerer to maximize the Target current.
